When we drive up to Santa Barbara, we like to visit the Margerum Wine tasting room in the Funk Zone. Our favorite thing to get there is Margerum Amaro: a fortified wine (23% alcohol) made with herbs and natural bitter ingredients, as well as caramelized sugar. The bottle comes with a recipe for this riff on the Manhattan cocktail.

The recommended recipe calls for rye whiskey, but we used Irish whiskey in honor of St. Patrick’s Day today ๐Ÿ€

A Manhattan made with amaro instead of vermouth is known as a Black Manhattan. This recipe goes a little further afield by adding a bit of lemon juice. The result isn’t like a typical Manhattan, but it’s an intriguing combination of tart, sweet, and bitter flavors.
