B. F. R. D.

Recipe: B. F. R. D. (serves one)

  • 1/2 oz. white rum
  • 1/2 oz. dark rum
  • 1/2 oz. Myers’s Original Dark Rum
  • pineapple juice
  • black cherry, lime wheel, and cocktail umbrella (optional) for garnish

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the white and dark rum. Fill with pineapple juice. Top with a float of Myers’s Rum. Do not stir. Garnish with a lime wheel, black cherry, and umbrella.

One of our favorite finds on Oahu was Buzz’s Original Steakhouse, where they make a cocktail that hits all the notes we were looking for in a tropical drink.  It’s called the B.F.R.D. (big freakin’ rum drink). Since coming back home, we’ve created our own version, with less rum and an umbrella (but if you want it stronger, just double the rum!).

The rum. We use Bacardi white and dark rums for the main body of the drink.  The key, though, is the float of Myers’s rum on top — it adds a rich molasses flavor that amps up the drink from the first sip.

If you’re making these for a party and want to have a non-alcoholic option available too, try out the Oahu Spritzer.
