Recipe: Red Hook (serves one)
- 2 oz. rye
- 1/2 oz. Punt e Mes vermouth
- 1/4 oz. Luxardo maraschino liqueur
- maraschino cherry
Stir liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with cherry.
Named after a neighborhood in Brooklyn, the Red Hook is similar in both name and style to the Greenpoint and Manhattan. The Punt e Mes gives the drink a bitter complexity, and the maraschino liquor adds sweetness. Most recipes call for 1/2 oz. maraschino liquor, but we prefer 1/4 oz.
We tried replacing the Punt e Mes with another sweet vermouth, but thought the drink ended up too sweet. Adding a dash of Angustura bitters as well, though, rounded out the drink nicely. You can make the Red Hook that way if you don’t have Punt e Mes.
