Irish Whiskey Skin

Recipe: Irish Whiskey Skin (serves one)

  • 2 oz. Irish whiskey
  • 4 oz. water, heated to boiling
  • 1 sugar cube
  • lemon peel
  • nutmeg

Stir together whiskey, hot water, and sugar cube in a mug. Garnish with lemon peel and sprinkles of nutmeg.

This cocktail is an Irish hot toddy — a perfect drink to warm up with on Saint Patrick’s Day. We used Jameson Irish whiskey, and made the drink extra festive by adding a sprig of wild-foraged clover (in other words, clover that grows as a weed in our yard).

The whiskey skin can be found in cocktail books dating back to the 19th century. We’re not sure if the “skin” in the name just refers to the lemon peel, or if it has some other origin.
