Budapest, Hungary offers everything from palatial cafes to wine tasting in an old monastery cellar. But we also had a surprising and fun experience at Szimpla Kert, a “ruin pub” built in the rooms and courtyards of a run-down building that might otherwise have been demolished.
The first thing we felt on entering Szimpla Kert was visual overload: the rooms are crammed with knick-knacks, and most of the walls are covered with graffiti and stickers. They have multiple bar counters. We chose the wine bar, since we were eager to explore more Hungarian wines, but there were also beer-focused bars and bars with specialty cocktails.
And if you want, you can lounge in a bathtub…
