Sister Carmella

Recipe: Sister Carmella (serves one)

  • 1 1/2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1/4 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 1/4 oz. Cynar
  • 1 tsp amaretto
  • orange twist

Stir rye, sweet vermouth, Cynar, and amaretto in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with orange twist.

Brian’s sister texted us a picture of a cocktail menu from Faun in Brooklyn. She had ordered the Sister Carmella, which sounded delicious, so we tried recreating a version at home. After a few iterations, this recipe is what we ended up on — we have no idea if this is what it tastes like at Faun, but we like it!

Our go-to sweet vermouth is usually Carpano Antica, but the menu specifically listed Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, so we ordered a bottle of that. In comparison, Carpano Antica is sweeter, with vanilla notes and a more syrupy mouthfeel. The Cocchi has more bitterness and leans more toward herbal and citrus flavors; it reminds us a bit of Dr. Pepper.

If you’re interested in another cocktail featuring rye and Cynar, you might like the Little Italy.

  1. You’re pretty close. After dining at Faun many years ago (early 2021, we sat outside in the winter, if was so cold), I asked the bartender for the recipe so I could recreate it at home. She told me: 1.5 oz rye (they used Rittenhouse), .5 oz amaretto, .5 oz dolin blanc vermouth, .5 oz cynar. If the menu you saw said sweet vermouth, perhaps the recipe change over time.
