Verde Azulada

Recipe: Verde Azulada (serves one)

  • 1 oz. Clase Azul Reposado Tequila
  • 1 oz. Clase Azul Guerrero Mezcal
  • 1/4 oz. green Chartreuse
  • 3/4 oz. lime juice
  • 1/3 oz. agave syrup
  • 5 mint leaves, muddled
  • mint sprig for garnish

Add mint leaves and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker and muddle lightly. Add ice, then add liquid ingredients and shake well. Strain into ice-filled Old Fashioned glass. Garnish with mint sprig.

We took a trip down the coast to Laguna Beach and had this cocktail at the Montage hotel there. This is our recreation of it, based on the recipe the bartender gave us. The hotel uses Clase Azul tequila and mezcal and even serves the drink in a cup made out of a Clase Azul tequila bottle — below is a picture of what the cocktail looked like there. Instead, we just used an aged tequila and a mezcal that we had on hand.

The drink is definitely in the Margarita family, built around agave spirits and lime juice. The use of green Chartreuse along with lime juice and mezcal also reminds us of the Last of the Oaxacans.
