Recipe: Mulled Wine (serves 4)
- 1 bottle red wine
- 1/4 cup brandy
- 1 orange, sliced
- 6 oz. fresh cranberries
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
Place cloves in a tea strainer for easy removal. Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum sauce pan. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover pan, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove cloves and cinnamon sticks from pan, and serve.
We’ve tried a lot of variants of mulled wine, and this is our favorite one. It puts us in the holiday mood, it isn’t too sweet, and we love to eat the cranberries from the cup.
Make sure to use a non-aluminum pan when making mulled wine, as the acids from the wine will react with aluminum, imparting a metallic taste (we’ve accidentally done this, and it doesn’t taste good). For the wine, we like to use Three Wishes Cabernet from Whole Foods, since it’s only $3 and is good in this recipe. We’ve tried with more expensive wines and it wasn’t any better.
You can substitute frozen raspberries for the cranberries and sugar, or rum for the brandy. Enjoy!
