Recipe: Christmas Cookie (serves one)
- 3/4 oz. peppermint schnapps
- 3/4 oz. dark crème de cacao
- 3/4 oz. vodka
- 3/4 oz. milk
- colored decorating sugar for rim of glass
To prepare glass: Pour a bit of peppermint schnapps on one plate, and some decorating sugar on another plate. Dip rim of cocktail glass in schnapps, then in sugar. For the drink: Stir peppermint schnapps, creme de cacao, vodka, and milk in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into sugar-rimmed glass.
This cocktail reminds us of chocolate-peppermint cookies, and the colored sugar adds a festive touch. We hope this gets you in the holiday spirit!
Ever wonder why crème de cacao has “crème” in its name, when it doesn’t contain cream? The term refers to a liqueur that has enough sugar that it takes on a syrupy or cream-like thickness. The minty liqueur in that category is crème de menthe — but for this recipe, we complement the crème de cacao with lighter-bodied peppermint schnapps.
For the liqueurs, we used bottles that are found easily in our area. They both happened to be from the Hiram Walker brand. We actually saw the original Walker distillery when we visited Windsor, Ontario a few years ago. The distillery was a major whisky producer in the 1860’s, and the area around it was known as Walkerville: Hiram Walker built houses for his workers there and aimed to establish a “model town”. You can still spot the Walkerville name on signs along the main street (see the picture below).
